LEGAE ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL

REPORT ON UKHWI TRIP 2-5 MAY 2017

It was yet another exciting time to undertake the trip to Ukhwi Primary School. I was honored and humbled to take up the challenge to lead the team as the coordinator (Team leader).

The team comprised of fourteen members. Five teachers from Legae English Medium School and nine from Legae Academy, which included th librarian, five O level students, the maintenance officer and two drivers. Or journey began at around 8 am on Tuesday 2nd May 2017. We felt really blessed because our leader, the Managing director for Legae Academy, Ms. T. O’Connell offered a prayer asking God to grant us travelling mercies. We arrived at Ukhwi Primary School at around 6 pm. We met with the Senior management team and shared our program with them. We were welcomed with a delicious dinner. Thereafter we retired to bed in our respective host family homes. The following two days were activity and fun filled.

CLASSES

On both days the teachers were allocated to classes as follows: Standard 1 and 2 Mrs Kalubila taught phonics and science, standard 3 Ms Daniels taught Information Technology, standard 4 Mr. Tsietso taught Maths and English, Standard 5 Mrs Hamaluba taught English and Maths, standard 6 and 7 Mr. Ncube taught Agriculture. The Legae academy students worked very hard as teacher aides while Ms. Jensen the librarian worked on the storeroom and class libraries.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS
Two seminar presentations were done in form of group counseling sessions by Mrs. M. Hamaluba. The two topics presented were: (1) Work etiquettes (Ethics in the work place) (2) Wellness at work. Two workshops were done. The first one on Wednesday by Mr. Ncube and Miss Daniels (Teaching aids). The second one on Thursday by Mr. Tsietso and Mrs Kalubila (The importance of colouring/Art).

DISTRIBUTION OF GIFTS
The whole team took pleasure in helping to distribute the gifts (shoes, socks, vests, blankets and jerseys). The Ukhwi primary school children were so delighted to receive these beautiful items, although a few Reception pupils were disappointed because they got smaller shoe sizes which could not fit them. However, it was all smiles. The teachers and their pupils both had reasons to be happy.

SOCIALIZATION AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE
The last evening of our stay in Ukhwi was fun filled. We had our dinner which we prepared ourselves around a fire. We had a chance to talk about different cultures and their values and beliefs. We learnt about how different foods are prepared by different tribes. For example, we taught them the Zambian way of preparing pap, and that is what we had for supper. The Ukhwi staff also taught us how to prepare porridge using the sweet melon, which we enjoyed on Friday morning before leaving.

All in all I would say the trip was educative and beneficial to both the Legae team as well as as the Ukhwi team, teachers and pupils respectively.

We left Ukhwi at 9:3am on Friday 5th May 2017. Our journey back to Gaborone was smooth. We arrived at Legae academy at around 19:00 hours.

We look forward to the next trip.
